Welcome to the ORI Fish App Marine Fish Guide for Southern Africa

Finally, a fish identification App designed especially for the South African marine angler and fish enthusiast.  The App is based on linefish research undertaken in South Africa over the last 50 years and includes the most recent information available.


Each of the 249 species profiles was carefully researched and written so that the information is accessible and easy to understand. The App was compiled by Dr Bruce Mann, Senior Scientist at ORI, we hope you are going to have many hours of fun playing with and learning from this useful guide. 

The current linefish regulations for marine recreational anglers in South Africa. A general summary of the regulations as well as species-specific regulations.
A comprehensive species profile covering Description, Distribution, Habitat, Feeding, Movement, Reproduction, Age & growth, Current status and Capture.
A simple line drawing of the general shape of the different fish families. Clicking on the shape will take you to the actual images of each species in the family to find your fish.
This is a fun section that allows you to work out for yourself what fish species you have caught or seen. It is designed as a “smart search”.
The compare function enables you to easily compare similar species.
A useful glossary provides a simple explanation of many of the terms used.
Multiple high quality photos and a drawing for each species.
Search for fish names using their common name in English, Afrikaans or by using their scientific name.
A simple map of the species’ distribution in southern African waters.
Record your own personal catches or fish observations.
For anglers who release their fish but want to know what its weight was. Enter the length and the approximate weight is automatically calculated.

We have tried to ensure that the information provided is as accurate as possible. Names, information and fishing regulations change. We will do our best to keep the App updated. Please contact fishapp@ori.org.za  if you find any mistakes or information that requires updating.
